How To Remove John Deere PTO Shaft Cover

Removing the PTO shaft cover on a John Deere tractor can be a frustrating experience for many people. The safety guards on modern PTO shafts are excellent, but they can make removing and reassembling the shaft a difficult problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to remove and reinstall the PTO shaft cover:

1. Release the locking pin of the PTO Shaft

When looking at the pin along the shaft, you’ll notice that there is a screwdriver slot in the pin. The holes where the pins are located are slightly “D” shaped. To remove the pin, slide a thin screwdriver into the slot “above” the pin and pry the pin back as it now slides easily through the “D” hole. Remember to push it back and turn the screwdriver 180 degrees to “lock” it when reassembling the shaft cone.

2. Assemble the PTO shaft to the gearbox

One of the steps in assembling a PTO auger is to connect the PTO shaft to the gearbox. To do this, you must somehow access the U-joint hidden by the very extended shroud on the tool end of the PTO shaft.

3. Reassemble the shaft

To reassemble the shaft, stand it upright, squeeze the collar into the shaft slot, and slide the yellow shaft cone and collar back into place. This step can be quite difficult in areas where you have to make the axis work almost horizontally.

4. Lock the PTO cone

With the shaft cone sliding back onto the shaft body, twist the shaft cone to lock it. Shaft PTO interlock, inspection port yellow PTO cone, and collar.

5. PTO shaft grease fittings

Periodically lubricate the joints on both ends of the shaft. Occasionally there will be a plastic mold flash that can block this nozzle opening. Now is the perfect time to clean it up and verify that the shaft is lubricated. Check the shaft “U” joint grease.
