Introduction to 900 Class Pintle Chain
900 Series Pintle Chains, also known as “sugar mill” or “intermediate carrier chain”, are widely used in sugar mills. When fitted with overlapping beaded carrier slats, multiple strands of 900 Pintle Chain with one or two holes per link can create a continuous apron conveyor for intermediate carrier service.
History and Categorization of 900 Class Pintle Chain
The 900 Class Pintle Chain is a type of conveyor chain that was initially designed for the sugar milling industry. It is categorized as an intermediate carrier chain and is commonly used to convey granulated sugar, sugar beet, and other similar materials from one location to another. The history of the 900 Class Pintle Chain dates back to the early 20th century when the need for a more reliable and efficient conveyor system was identified in the sugar milling industry.
Benefits of 900 Class Pintle Chain
- Designed with dual barrels to accommodate double sprockets
- Smooth bushings press-fitted into the links and keyed into place, which are renewable and can be powered out and replaced if worn
- Heavy ribs reinforce the traveling barrels to remove the possibility of material build-up in the sprocket contact area, which often causes the chain to jump the sprocket
- Large sliding surfaces to reduce chain wear and prolong chain life
- Available in cottered construction only, assembled with T-headed pins, which are locked into place by two lugs cast on the ends of the driving barrels to prevent pin rotation
- Links run in the direction of their shut narrow end
- Manufactured according to manufacturer’s specifications and can perfectly replace links made by other manufacturers
Material of 900 Class Pintle Chain
900 Class Pintle Chain links are cast of malleable iron or Promal (Duramal). The chain is furnished with carbon steel heat-treated pins and carbon steel case-hardened bushings as standard. However, stainless steel pins and bushings can be provided when specified.
Installation, Maintenance, and Repair of 900 Class Pintle Chain
900 Class Pintle Chain should be installed in the direction of their shut narrow end. The pins of the chain should be checked regularly for rotation during operation, which can cause wear on the inside of the bushing. The chain should be lubricated regularly to prevent wear and tear. If the chain becomes worn, it can be repaired by replacing the bushings and pins. If the chain is beyond repair, it can be replaced with a new one.
